The Plan
Class Sessions
We’ll be conducting class via Zoom.
Two hours and fifty minutes seems long to me– I’ve checked in with others. They concur.
To make things simpler, I’m going to shorten our weekly class sessions by roughly an hour. To make up for that instructional time, you’ll to meet weekly with your Assignment Material Project Group. You don’t have to meet for a whole hour. Some weeks you might check in with one another. Other weeks you may need need to review material. See the Assignment Material Project for more instructions.
Our weekly meeting will be structured around short whole class interaction and break out groups.
10:00 to 10:40 Writing Group Session
We’ll begin class with a Writing Group Session. See the Weekly Writing Group Session for more instructions. To ensure that the time goes smoothly, I’ll put up a discussion topic in Blackboard.
10:40 to 11:30 Teaching Workshop
We’ll discuss the week’s teaching topic and work together. To ensure that the time goes smoothly, I’ll put up a discussion topic in Blackboard.
11:30 to 12:00 Project Group Check In/Additional Work
Each week the groups will report on the progress of their Assignment Project, we’ll check in with questions, or we’ll do additional work on teaching and writing as scheduled.
Writing Group Session
We will begin each class with a Writing Group Session.
In class, one aspect of our inquiry is into the way you each understand yourselves as writers. The purpose of this inquiry is to enrich your view of your students experience and your own stance as a teacher of writers.
Choose a Writing Project
You need to choose a writing project goal that you’ll submit (not for this class) by the end of the semester.
Keep a Log
You’ll keep a log of your work throughout the week.
Review and Reflect
Each week at the beginning of class, you’ll review your log entires, reflect on what worked and didn’t and identify tasks for the next week. You’ll put this information in your log.
Meet with Your Agraphia Group
After we complete the review and reflect session– it will take about fifteen minutes– we’ll convene in breakout sessions. You’ll share what you’ve learned with your group. I will share the structure and ground rules for these meetings with you in the March 23 class.
Reconvene as a Class
We will reconvene to address any questions or discuss any thoughts sparked by the readings or your work.
Each week, you’ll be given a reading that addresses issues faced by creative writers and writers in academic settings alike, such as time, managing the work load, task avoidance, and facing new skills and genres.
You’ll need to read and weigh in on the reading via discussion board before our class session.
Teaching Issue Workshop
Every week we’ll have a Teaching Issue Workshop.
It will either be an issue related to the work of your Assignment Project group, or to another aspect of instruction, such as responding to student writing, or classroom atmosphere.
You’ll have a discussion board to complete.
We’ll begin the work together, then convene in pairs or break out groups, then return to the whole group.
We’ll end with each group reporting in on the progress of their Assignment Project Group or work on another issue related to the class.
Tools: Discussion Board, Hypothesis, Google Doc Update
We’ll rely on several tools to help us make up for what the casual interaction of face to face classes allows. Also, this will help us stay in contact and make sure questions get answered.
Discussion Boards
I’m going to put up discussions of material each week. You’ll need to post once, then reply to someone. There will likely be two each week. You’ll need to finish them by class time. I will count them up by Wednesday. You’ll be able to take a pass on two or three. Will let you know. Access via blackboard.
Hypothes.is
Hypothes.is is an online annotating tool. You’ll be using it to supply your classmates with thoughts about the assignment projects they are working on. Access via blackboard.
Google Docs Questions And Answers
I want to have a common space to answer common questions, rather than emailing the class throughout the day as something comes up. I will post a google doc where you can post questions about assignments, which I will check every morning. If you post after 11 am, expect an answer the following day. Check there first if you have a novel assignment question (something not personal, but for clarification, like “What are we going to do about observations?”)
I will check email throughout the day, but stop at 5 pm. I will answer any question your have, but remember, no worries. We will work out everything.
Google Doc Group Report
Since I’m trusting that you’ll meet each week with your group to work out the details of your assignment project, you’ll need to post about the meeting in a google doc that I will check every Monday afternoon.
You’ll update me on progress, tell me how work is being divided, share your project calendar and summarize your plans.
Group Evaluation
You’ll be arranging for a lot of group work in your teaching life. As part of your reflection, I’ll share a very low key group evaluation sheet with you that you’ll complete at the end of the term.
